The Labor federal government has come to power with a mandate to deliver on a new model of aged care and it is pleasing to see that, in some respect, it is rolling up its sleeves. This includes rolling out a key plank of its promised reform: The requirements for onsite 24/7 registered nurses (RNs) at all residential aged care facilities and the impending implementation of a minimum number of care minutes per resident.
The question is, how can providers and government increase RNs and care minutes in the face of shocking workforce constraints and aggressive competition for labour from adjacent public health and disability sectors?
